Join PEO York Chapter’s COVID-19 Virtual Town Hall to learn how engineers across the board from small engineering firms to research institutions have been adapting, pivoting, and innovating during these challenging times.
Our speakers representing engineering firms, academia, regulatory body and financial sector will share their experiences, innovations, achievements and contributions in the fight against COVID-19.
Marisa Sterling, P.Eng., FEC
President-Elect at Professional Engineers Ontario
Marisa Sterling is a distinguished engineer and academic administrator. She has over 20 years of experience working and volunteering in the engineering field, in both the private and public sectors. Most recently she served as the elected vice president of PEO and is currently the assistant dean and director of diversity, inclusion and professionalism at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. Sterling previously worked in the consumer products industry in R&D and brand management, and for PEO as manager of enforcement and lead of the repeal of the industrial exception. Her extensive strategic and operational stewardship has positively impacted students and engineers.
Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at Ryerson University
Dr. Hadis Zarrin is an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at Ryerson University and the Director of Nano-Engineering laboratory for Energy and Environmental Technologies (NLEET). She holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from University of Waterloo with 10-year experience of nanostructured materials development for electrochemical energy storage and sensing devices. Currently her research is focused on the design and engineering of smart multifunctional nanostructures and nanocomposites for clean energy storage, environmental remediation, and wearable sensor systems. Her achievements have resulted in five awarded scholarships including NSERC CGS-D and Waterloo Nanofellowship, one patent, one book chapter, and >15 peer-reviewed published papers in prestigious journals with >1042 citations to date.

Peyman Moeini, Ph.D. Candidate, P. Eng., PMP, is an entrepreneur engineer with a track record of launching several successful Internet-of-Things (IoT) & Artificial Intelligence (AI) products in various fields such as agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, freight, retail, and mining. Peyman has won more than 30 innovation and entrepreneurship awards in the IoT&AI fields. One of his inventions includes making the time efficiency of an AI algorithm software 500 times faster for the exact same results! Peyman holds several inventions in IoT&AI space and is the founder and CEO of Peytec, a Smart Industrial IoT&AI company that builds and sells hyper-accurate "Indoor GPS" and Sensing Systems. Under Peyman’s leadership Peytec was announced to be among top 10 most promising IoT companies in Canada in 2019 and Peytec’s mining product won the York Region’s Professional Engineers of Ontario, “2019 Best Project of the Year” award. The Peytec team, alongside with other engineers, scientists, and partners have stepped forward to help stop the spread of COVID19.
Mechanical Engineer for Innovative Automation
Trefor Armstrong is a Mechanical Engineer for Innovative Automation. Trefor is an experienced Applications Specialist with a demonstrated history of working in the industrial automation industry. A strong mechanical design background has given him experience solving mechanical development and assembly issues. He graduated from the University of Guelph in 2016 and recently acquired his professional engineering designation. Trefor enjoys working in both a sales and engineering capacity at Innovative. During the beginning stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, Trefor lead a small team that designed and built a cost-effective ventilator.

Dr. Dennis Woo is a professional engineer working for KPMG LLP. It is Canada's Top 100 Employers and one of the four largest accounting organizations in the world with over 230,000 professionals. His expertise spans a broad spectrum of industries, such as industrial markets, consumer & retail, technology, media & telecommunications, real estate, financial services, energy & natural resources, and healthcare. His work helps entities such as engineering firms to recover technology development expenditures both in Canada and overseas. Dennis Woo is also a past chair of the PEO York Chapter and has been actively participating in chapter's activities since 2006.
