Building your Online Presence and Becoming a Thought Leader

Drawing from a combined 10 years of experience in the social media sphere, our two speakers, Jaigris and Tyler will show you how to use the latest social media tools to build your online presence and become a thought leader in your field. A particular focus will be on Twitter and LinkedIn, currently the two most popular professionally oriented social media platforms. They’ll also discuss best practices related to blogging, shareable online presentations, and website creation. At the end of this presentation you will understand the intricacies of popular digital tools and be prepared kick start your online presence.
Jaigris Hodson is an Assistant Professor, LTF, in the School of Professional Communication at Ryerson. Her research specializes in using computer-assisted discourse and content analysis of large multimodal online and digital texts in order to understand the way people make sense of their relationships with each other and with organizations. She recently spent a year as a social media consultant with leading public relations firm, GCI Canada. She has published research in a wide range of academic publications including the Canadian Journal of Communication, Cultural Studies, Critical Methodologies, and Loading... Journal of the Canadian Game Studies Association. She has also published in non-academic publications such as The Evolllution and spoke at TEDX Victoria 2012. She maintains an active role as a social media consultant, most currently working with the Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) on the social media strategy for the Internationally broadcast Canadian Country Music Awards.
Tyler Handley is a social media marketing expert and a published academic. He is an enthusiastic and highly adaptable digital marketer with an entrepreneurial bent. Working as a Social Media Coordinator at the BBCW Labs accelerator, Tyler discovered and resolved a problem for which no solution yet existed.
After working as a digital marketing advisor at the BBC, he founded Blurbi – a social media content marketplace. Tyler received his bachelor’s degree in Communications from Wilfrid Laurier University and his master’s degree in Digital Society and Culture from King’s College, University of London.
