The Professional Engineers Ontario - York Chapter Education Committee is organizing an Engineering Design Challenge for grades 7 and 8 students of schools located in York Region.

This year's challenge: Wind Turbine Blade Design

Location: Cafeteria, Sir William Mulock SS, 705 Columbus Way, Newmarket, Ontario, L3X 2M7

Date:  Sunday, March 26, 2023

Time: 10 a.m - 4 p.m (Pizza lunch is provided to student teams)

Registration link: https://peoyork2023-03-NEM.eventbrite.ca

The focus of this year’s Design Challenge is for students to design and assenmble a wind turbine with the materials provided. Wind turbines are used to convert wind energy to electrical energy, and the electrical energy is used to power electronic devices. In teams of 4, students will design wind turbine blades for a wind turbine that will be light in weight and have high efficiency in converting wind energy to electrical energy.

The performance of the wind turbine will be judged on:

  1. Weight of the wind turbine blades
  2. Amount of electric power generated by the wind turbine
  3. Optimized use of material

The design requirements, limitations, and materials will be provided at the start of the challenge.

Students will plan, build, and test their designs on March 26, 2023 using materials provided by York Chapter Professional Engineers Ontario.

  • 4 students per team.
  • 1 adult representative per team (to provide health and safety supervision, must not contribute to the design or build process).
  • Registration is limited to a maximum of 20 teams from schools within York Region.
  • Engineering Science Prizes and certificate for the top 3 teams.
  • Each student will receive a certificate of participation.
  • Please read the consent form before registration. By registering for the Design Challenge, you agree to the terms of the consent form.
  • Registration closes on Monday March 25th at 8:00 p.m or when all tickets are sold out, whichever comes first.
