2020 AMD Engineering Mathletics Competition

What is the AMD Engineering Mathletics competition?

AMD Engineering Mathletics is a competition designed to create a passion for the application of mathematics in solving day-to-day scientific and engineering problems. Students will be challenged to be active and creative in the use of mathematics. Different facets of mathematics will be introduced and tested. Zoom will be used to deliver the challenge and Quizizz will be used by the participants to answer a series of questions in numeric format.
During the Mathletics competition, there will also be an AMD Challenge (automatically enrolled).
This competition will be conducted in English only. 

When is the competition?

Saturday, November 14, 2020

Junior competition: 9:30AM - 1PM (Zoom opens at 9:30 AM, competition starts at 10:00 AM)

Senior competition: 4:00PM - 6:30PM (Zoom opens at 4:00 PM, competition starts at 4:30 PM)

Where is the competition?

The competition is held online using Zoom and Quizizz.

System Requirements:

  • Stable internet connection
  • Participants need to be able to run Zoom to listen to the presentation and turn on the webcam for the proctors during the competition.
  • Quizizz will be used to deliver the slides, questions and collect the answers.
  • Information for registering for both services for free will be provided after purchasing the ticket.

Who can participate in the competition?

This event is open to all full-time York Region students on a first come first served basis. Students in the nearby regions cannot participate. Individuals only, this is not a team event.

Registration must be done online ONLY. No registration is allowed at the event. Please bring the online confirmation ticket to the competition.

Registration fee is $7.00 per participant
Registration starts on Saturday, Oct 8, 2020 at 8AM EST.

Open to students that are currently in grades 7 and 8 (based on grade 7 curriculum)

2018 10 27 Mathletics


Students should have their breakfast/lunch before attending the competition. They should bring the following items on the day of the competition:

  1. A printout of the online registration/confirmation ticket
  2. Scientific calculator
  3. Pencil
  4. Eraser
  5. Scrap paper with which to do calculations
  6. Go to the bathroom before the competition


Rules and Scoring


  1. To create a passion in the application of mathematics in solving day-to-day engineering problems.
  2. To create an interest in active thinking and problem-solving.
  3. To provide practical experience in engineering problem-solving.
  4. To provide an entertaining and friendly competition environment.

Eligibility, Testing Standard and Prizes

  1. All full-time elementary school students from the York Region are eligible.
  2. Questions are based upon the Ontario Curriculum Grades 1-8: Mathematics.
  3. Questions related to the application of mathematics to science and engineering.
  4. Some questions will be based on engineering topics introduced during the competition.
  5. First, second and third prizes will be awarded in each level.

  2. There is no limit on the number of students from each school.
  3. Students may participate in only one level of this competition.

Competition format

  1. Both Junior and Senior Mathletics Competition levels are individual events.
  2. Each level of the competition will have one round for an hour and a half with increasing difficulty.
  3. Questions will be presented using Quizizz and the audio will be delivered using Zoom.
  4. Students should find a quiet room and participate the challenge alone.
  5. Students are required to turn on their webcam for proctoring to ensure fairness. Students who leave the video feed will be disqualified.
  6. Students are allowed to use aids like calculators, paper, pens, and books. (As a minimum a calculator, scratch pad, and pencil are strongly recommended)
  7. Communication with anyone during the competition is not allowed.
  8. Late comers will not be allowed to join.
  9. Concept and the question will be explained and then everyone will have 60 seconds to provide their answers.
  10. Students can only submit answer once, when they hit the submit button. No answer is submitted if they didn’t click submit in time.
  11. Submit the answer in the expected format stated in the question, without space or units.
  12. There will be a demo round to let students familiarize with the platform. The demo round is not part of the competition.

  1. Marks are calculated based on accuracy, speed and difficulty of the question.
  2. Marks will not be deducted for wrong answers or unanswered questions.


  1. This competition will be conducted in English only.
  2. The final result of the competition will be available a few days after the event and posted on the peoyork.com website.
  3. A panel of adjudicators will resolve all disputes. Their decisions are final and binding.
  4. Teachers, parents, guardians and their guests are not permitted to assist or interfere with the participants.
  5. Certificates of participation will be emailed to the participants.



Q: Can a student from Toronto, Durham, or Peel Region participate in the competition?
No, students must be currently studying at York Region.


Q: Could we receive additional sample questions?
There are 4 sample questions provided for each level and, there is no additional sample questions for this event.

Teachers, parents, guardians, and their guests are not permitted to assist or interfere with the participants.



Sample Questions

Questions and background information or supporting details will be projected onto Zoom. Participants will then use Quizizz to answer the question. The question could be in numeric or multiple-choice format.
