SPRING 2000

YORK CHAPTER

VOLUME 2000-2

Chair's Message

The Millennium year has begun on a positive note - our chapter's Annual General Meeting (AGM) was a good example of mixing business with pleasure in the right proportions. In an attractive setting at the Embassy Suites Hotel, ninety-seven PEO members and their gusts enjoyed the dinner and dance party. The party was preceded with a short business section, during which the new Executive Committee was elected. The common opinion is that the millennium party was the best chapter's AGM ever. With such a good start, we will continue to provide our members with networking and social opportunities.

I would like to thank all the members of the past chapter Executive Committee, led by Brian Ross, P.Eng. for their involvement, effort, and contribution to the profession in the past year.

We are going to have a very exciting and challenging year. Following the overwhelming victory of the advocacy body concept, we are facing the task of helping define the role of chapters in the structure of both PEO and OSPE (Ontario Society of Professional Engineers). Notwithstanding the above, we will carry on with our traditional activities, comprising a mix of regulatory and advocacy functions as well as educational events. We will put more emphasis on improving the communication between the Executive Committee and our four thousand members so that we can truly represent the views and desires of the majority of our chapter.

We have emerged from the AGM with a full set of chapter executives. In addition there are a number of members who are willing to get involved in chapter committees. We always welcome members who are willing to get involved in the affairs of the profession. As a matter of fact, where better to get involved than in the affairs of the profession in which you are going to spend the rest of your life? Anyone who would be interested can either phone me or send email to peoyork@interlog.com.

We have planned a number of chapter events, listed in this newsletter. Their purpose is not only to provide specific knowledge or enjoyment, but also to give our members an opportunity to meet and get to know each other (including the spouses). Engineers rarely appreciate the value of personal contacts, while in fact many life opportunities depend on them. Therefore, I strongly encourage everybody who participates in our events to bring and display their business cards or business brochures, get to know fellow engineers, and exchange your contact information. Hope to see you there!

Design Challenge 2000

On Saturday March 4, 2000, The Education Sub Committee of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) York Chapter held their annual Engineering Week event. "Design Challenge 2000" at Newmarket High School from 1:00 pm to 3:00pm.

In all there were 20 students that participated representing both the York Region Separate and Public schools. Teams from Newmarket, Markham and Sutton assembled in Newmarket for the event on Saturday. Those attending included St. Paul's, St. Anthony's, Sutton and Armadale. All participants including teachers received prizes and lunch. The Education sub committee was well represented with over 10 volunteers attending. There was extremely positive feedback from all students and teachers that were involved. Public Forum on Water Quality and Conservation

Water is an essential element for our lives. In Canada we are lucky to have about half of the world's fresh water in our lakes. But increases in water demand due to the population growth, irrigation, lawn watering, industrial applications and various diversions on one hand and erratic changes in precipitation patterns and continous erosion of glaciers (sources of water) due to global warming on the other hand, pose the question: Can an adequate supply of water be sustained to meet the ever increasing consumption demand?

To respond to this question, York Chapter has organized a public forum to discuss the issues of: governement policies on water, sustainable water resources in York Region, water conservation and reducing water pollution.
