Chair's Message The Millennium year has begun on a positive note - our chapter's Annual General Meeting (AGM) was a good example of mixing business with pleasure in the right proportions. In an attractive setting at the Embassy Suites Hotel, ninety-seven PEO members and their gusts enjoyed the dinner and dance party. The party was preceded with a short business section, during which the new Executive Committee was elected. The common opinion is that the millennium party was the best chapter's AGM ever. With such a good start, we will continue to provide our members with networking and social opportunities. I would like to thank all the members of the past chapter Executive Committee, led by Brian Ross, P.Eng. for their involvement, effort, and contribution to the profession in the past year. We are going to have a very exciting and challenging year. Following the overwhelming victory of the advocacy body concept, we are facing the task of helping define the role of chapters in the structure of both PEO and OSPE (Ontario Society of Professional Engineers). Notwithstanding the above, we will carry on with our traditional activities, comprising a mix of regulatory and advocacy functions as well as educational events. We will put more emphasis on improving the communication between the Executive Committee and our four thousand members so that we can truly represent the views and desires of the majority of our chapter. We have emerged from the AGM with a full set of chapter executives. In addition there are a number of members who are willing to get involved in chapter committees. We always welcome members who are willing to get involved in the affairs of the profession. As a matter of fact, where better to get involved than in the affairs of the profession in which you are going to spend the rest of your life? Anyone who would be interested can either phone me or send email to peoyork@interlog.com. We have planned a number of chapter events, listed in this newsletter. Their purpose is not only to provide specific knowledge or enjoyment, but also to give our members an opportunity to meet and get to know each other (including the spouses). Engineers rarely appreciate the value of personal contacts, while in fact many life opportunities depend on them. Therefore, I strongly encourage everybody who participates in our events to bring and display their business cards or business brochures, get to know fellow engineers, and exchange your contact information. Hope to see you there! John Schindler P.Eng Chair |
