contractor or employeeUntil recent years, most engineers were hired as permanent employees. Today, however, a wider variety of working relationships is the norm. Engineers may be hired as employees, as dependent contractors, and as independent contractors, on a full-time or part-time basis, and on a fixed term basis or indefinite basis. This new range of working relationships impacts entitlements (e.g. termination entitlements) and obligations (e.g. under the Income Tax Act, the Excise Tax Act, and the WSIB) .
At this presentation, returning presenter Christine Ashton of Wilson Vukelich LLP will speak about which working relationship is best: employees or contractors.  Christine will cover:

  • Tax obligations in regards to employees vs. contractors
  • Legal obligations and liability exposure in regards to employees vs. contractors
  • Best practices for drafting employee and contractor agreement
