Surely in a country like Canada we can count on having a steady supply of safe, good-tasting drinking water from the tap. Yet at the same time, many of us chose to drink bottled water instead. Why do we do this? In other parts of the world, contaminated drinking water is still one of the largest roadblocks to social and economic development. This presentation will touch on some of these topics, as well as provide a simple overview of how we produce drinking water in Canada, the economics of the business, and some of the technical challenges confronting the municipal drinking water industry. We’ll also look at new and emerging trends in water treatment.
Dr. Ron Hofmann is a professor with the Drinking Water Research Group in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto. He holds a federally-funded Industrial Research Chair that brings industry and municipalities together to try to make drinking water safer, cheaper to produce, and less energy intensive. He manages a consortium of about a dozen graduate students and research assistants to bring innovation to areas such as new water disinfection techniques and the control of emerging contaminants. He routinely works with consultants in the design of water treatment plants, and with government to help to develop regulations that reflect the scientific state of the art.
