Introduction to Metallurgical Failure Analysis & Fractography
Friday, November 20th, 2015 @ 1:30pm to 4:00pm
Location: Steel Image, 7 Innovation Drive, Flamborough, ON
Diagnosing the precise cause of a failure is critical for developing cost-effective solutions that prevent repeat failures. Metallurgical failure analysis is a useful tool for supporting manufacturing and reliability efforts by providing details of equipment failures that would not otherwise be available. This workshop will review the methods of failure analysis and include a hands-on introduction to fractography (how to read fracture surface features under a microscope). Participants will get to examine several fracture surfaces from several case studies. Participants will leave with a better understanding of visual fracture recognition, failure analysis and the role it plays in supporting manufacturing/reliability.
Our host is Shane Turcott, P.Eng, MASc is Principal Metallurgist at Steel Image. Shane provides failure analysis supporting oil, manufacturing, mining, inspection and energy industries. In addition, he provides in-situ metallography for on-site, non-destructive material evaluation. Before Steel Image, Shane worked for Dofasco, Bodycote (now Exova) and Liburdi Turbine Services performing failure analysis and metallurgical consulting. Shane is the 2015 recipient of the McMaster University Alumni Arch Award and is presently vice chair of American Society of Metals Ontario. Shane has also been past chair of ASM Ontario. Shane attended McMaster University where he received his MASc in Metallurgy and his B.Eng. in Materials Engineering.
The presentation at the lab is limited to 20 people and the price to attend is $10 per person.
